Stirling: A Scottish City with so much to offerWritten by R. A. StewartIf you are ever in Scotland you just have to spend some time in Stirling and experience what this city has to offer as I did during the summer of 2024. That is, if you can call it summer. It was one of those years when Mother Nature didn’t always play ball but then visitors to Scotland do not travel there for the weather.All of the places I like to patronise are all within a short walking distance from each other. Whether it is the train or bus station, banks, cafes, restaurants, or fast food joints, supermarket, banks, post office, or library you are going to, it is only a short walk away.I enjoyed mingling with the locals and it wasn’t too long before&nbsp; I felt as though I was a part of the community. It was certainly much different from Edinburgh and Glasgow which were full of tourists.Where to go for somewhere to eat in StirlingI highly recommend Bob and Bert’s on Murray Place. I went there for a hot chocolate and some chips several times. The staff were very helpful and pleasant. It is certainly a nice cosy place to have a coffee and read a newspaper. McDonalds is just a few doors further down. It provides free WIFI which I made use of early in the morning when it was quiet. There is even a socket where you can plug in and charge up your devices. The staff were also friendly to talk to. There is a coffee Bottie out at Logie. The number 52 bus will take you there. It is one bus stop past the camping ground.Where to stay in StirlingThe YHA on John Street is a nice place to stay but be warned; if you are on foot because it is a walk up this steep hill to get there. I stayed here on my first two nights which I had booked weeks earlier when I was in New Zealand. I could not extend my stay because it was booked out. Note that checking in time is at 4PM which applies to all YHA hostels in Scotland.&nbsp;The Witches Craig Camping Ground at Logie is a nice place to stay if you like camping. Problem is that it has no cooking facilities which means trips to Stirling every day for somewhere to eat.What to do in StirlingStirling has a rich history dating back to the First Scottish Wars of Independence and Robert the Bruce and William Wallace. Stirling Castle is certainly worth a visit if you have not already been and the William Wallace Monument is another interesting landmark. I have been to both on a previous trip to Scotland.&nbsp;Events to see in StirlingThere are highland games around Scotland during summer including several in the Stirlingshire area. The Alva Highland games take place on the second Saturday of July. The number 52 bus will take you there. Stirling and Bridge of Allan also have their own highland games in August.Travelling to and from StirlingScotland has a terrific train network and with Stirling being in the centre of Scotland travelling to most places just requires a walk to the train station. The local buses have a no contact payment system where you just tap your card which is far more convenient than using cash.Tourist Information CentreThe tourist information centre is on John Street just past the YHA. They have lots of information there, but you can just as easily find out about everything online.Other informationOne task on my first day in Scotland was to find a plug which fits the sockets in Scotland. I found a place which sells them at a reasonable price; it is Nickel and Dime which is right next door to Bob and Bert’s on Murray Place. Be sure to drop in next door for a coffee and bite to eat after having been to Nickel and Dime. I am seeking funds for my next trip.
