About Me
Hi! Im Toni Cañete, a filmmaker from Cagayan de Oro City, based in Quezon City, with a Bachelors degree in Film from the University of the Philippines Diliman.
I write, direct, and produce films! pasilong was hailed ‘First Place’ in the Documentary Category of the ‘Ika 34 Gawad CCP para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video’, and desilya bagged the ‘Best Mindanao Film’ and ‘Best Screenplay’ awards in the most recent 21st Mindanao Film Festival. I was also officially selected as a mentor for Writing and Storytelling through Direction and Cinematography in the ‘Hala, Bitaw!’ 2024 Bisaya Crash Course.
I gravitate towards the cinema of remembering, the capacity of film to convey loss, absence, and grief by exhibiting what is present, actual, and real. I also love making films that touch and play on the complexities of language, family, religion, and queerness!
